”HAMLET 2000”
An abridged version of Hamlet set in modern-day New York, in Shake- speare’s English. On the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, a film that shows how the bard is never out of date. In politics, the private and the public intermingle, often to the detriment of society at large. Hamlet, the notorious ditherer, is called upon not only to avenge his father but to set the state of things to rights, a responsibility that weighs heavily on his shoul- ders. Is he mad or pretending to be mad? Does he love Ophelia or pretend to? As Claudio and Gertrude turn everyone (including Ophelia) into puppe- ts, spies and henchmen, Hamlet is the only one who plays a better game than them. Finally, with “Let be” he resigns himself to fate (or providence?), allowing some other force (but what?) to determine the out- come of events. A dazzling Shakepsearean display of verbal dexterity, inve- stigating the ultimate value of life, loyalty and truth. (Marcus Perryman)
