Tom McCarthy’s second film as a director marks a radical change in storyli- ne from his initial outing (The Station Agent) as it confronts issues relating to identity, immigration and cross-cultural communication in post-9/11 New York City. The story follows the life of a lonely and widowed college professor (Richard Jenkins) in late middle age whose life changes when he goes to New York unwillingly to attend a conference and finds that his apartment has been taken over by a couple:
two illegal occupants who are also illegal immigrants (Haaz Sleiman, Danai Gurira).
When one of them is arrested wrongly, the film delves into the unremitting powers of state bureaucracy and apathy that the “war on terror” has created and that the characters in the film are forced to deal with. This is a heartfelt humanistic drama that is carried out with impressive grace and understatement.
